#Binary Tree Representation

As a NB, Taash is a huge blow to non-binary representation. Yeah, give the non-binary rep to the rudest, most emotionally immature, hypocritical companion. Make their personal quest about them getting all defensive when their mom reasonably asks about what being non-binary is, because oh my God how dare Mom be ignorant to this super abstract concept that is difficult to articulate to someone who does not perceive the world that way, cancel her with death. Make Taash coded autistic to give them the excuse for being a poorly socialized brat that gives you no option to tell them to shut the fuck up like any reasonable person in the real world would tell them to do because autism is no excuse for rudeness and casual disregard for other peoples’ feelings.
Like why are we feeding into the stereotype that NB people are immature brats who expect the world to freeze when they’re misgendered and for people to flagellate themselves with stupid performative punishments when they slip up or don’t immediately grasp the concept? This is literally how Republicans and conservatives see us. These are the jokes they make about us to invalidate us because they think that’s how we behave, and then you have Veilguard literally say “Yeah we’re like that lol”. If it’s some sort of subtle attempt at satire, it’s a shitty one that I’m not laughing at because it’s a waste of NB rep just to be ironic. If it’s sincere, it’s an embarrassing power fantasy that only the lamest and most miserable person on earth would find cathartic.
Imagine if Emmrich was the non-binary companion. Keep his personality and appearance (ok tweak it so it looks far less modern), but you learn in his romance ‘actually gender is not that much of a concern for me. In death we are all the same.’ and the reason he looks like *that* is because he likes it. You could add more depth to his fear of death with the question of “Have I lived as my most authentic self? Am I truly who I am, or have I fallen into the trap of reflecting what society expects of someone born with the body that I have?’ because there is this worry that some NB people like myself have where we’re not outwardly “NB” enough, like we don’t practice what we preach. Most importantly, Emmrich would never use the term “non-binary” to describe himself. He would have a term or phrase he would use to describe his feelings that someone of that setting would use to represent how queer people would characterize and conceptualize their gender and sexuality for themselves before they had access to all the precise modern labelling. He could call himself some untranslatable word that he’s transcribed from some foreign language—Tevene, Qunlat—or he gleaned from some epitaph while working with the Mourn Watch, an epitaph for a Planasene tribe member who was given the designation that roughly translated to “neutral” for referenced sex (gender and sex being interchangeable to these ancient peoples). SOMETHING cool like that. Something thoughtful and full of far more depth than thunk “I’m non-binary”.
Personally to me, non-binary is a political philosophy as much as it can be personal expression. You can dress “binary” and be non-binary because the point is that it doesn’t matter, and that is the beauty of it. There’s freedom in that nihilism and exploration, and Emmrich would’ve been a cool gateway to that sort of ‘live as you wish because we’ll be dust eventually’, especially from an older man. We have very little queer older men rep in media, and far, far less rep of NB individuals over 30 just in general. Being NB is seen as a phase dominated by young people. Emmrich would be that bridge and perhaps even that door for older individuals who might not have considered they were non-binary because it’s a young person thing or what have you.
And you know we could explore these ideas more if Veilguard had, I don’t know, extensive dialogue trees and opportunities to talk to our companions outside of demarcated “hey I need to talk to you” events, shitty banters, and lil intramurals between the companions that Rook is just a bystander to like a camp counselor or head of HR.

Please note that I took most of my information from online, and I didn't personally read/ watch everything, so there may be some mistakes. Also, some of the not-canon characters are very likely aspec, but just not confirmed. And especially if they say/ do really obviously aro/ ace stuff, I wasn't sure if it's enough to put them in the "confirmed" category. (e.g. Saiki literally said he isn't attracted to anyone regardless of gender, and never wants to be in a relationship. But there are still people who doubt his aroace-ness. (And at this point I don't see how it could be anything but aphobia, to deny the mere possibility of him being aroace so vehemently lol.) )
Also: Sadly, I couldn't find good aro-allo characters except Claire/ Claude from "baker thief". There is tons of good a-spec representation in that book (also more side characters that I didn't mention here), but I couldn't really find any fan-art. So then I just slapped the entire book cover on the collage.

Nobody said it, so I will : Happy birthday Gidget!! Today is (at least in my timezone it still is) March 3rd, which means it is Gidget's birthday today. They mean a lot to me as a character because well, first, they are part of the main cast of my favorite game (you'll never guess which one) and that implies that they are extremely well written. I loved seeing their entire character arc play out, from their backstory, the reveal of how their bigoted mother has greatly influenced their upbringing as a person and how their crush on Iggy and suppressed gender dysphoria has led them down a dark path, twisted by the magic of the Tree's wonderland. It is also quite rare to see non binary representation, so seeing Gidget's character immediately have their pronouns switched to they/them was honestly very thrilling to see. One of my favorite things about their character is how, even after the timeline resets at the end of the game, the narration still uses they/them to refer to Gidget. As in, that is one of the memories that the crew remembers. Who Gidget is. Perhaps it is also what encourages Gidget to come out post wonderland instead of suppressing their identity, like in the previous timeline.
Oh, and character design wise, they are simply incredible. Their blonde little hair clumps or whatever they are, hanging near their ears? LOVELY. It gives the character so much style! Speaking of style, their aesthetic is simply flawless. Even evil spider Gidget was absolutely slaying. And their design got EVEN cooler after their haircut. UGHHH.
I'll admit, it took me a bit of time to warm up to this character. Partially because, the way they treat Iggy in wonderland is less than ideal, in fact, it is quite horrific. As soon as I finished the game for the first time, my favorite character was Genzou, and my least favorite from the main cast was Gidget. As a matter of fact, Genzou left a sweet taste on my tongue, where Gidget left a bitter one. But with time and rumination, one learns to appreciate all tastes. Even if Gidget's actions were horrific and scarring, it only takes a bit of thinking to realize that it was merely wonderland twisting their wounds to make them into this incredibly violent person. After all, Iggy, Orlam and Bucks also get incredibly influenced and seemingly turn into completely different people as well, all because they were relentlessly dehumanized. The same thing happened with Gidget. Never in a thousand universes would they have done what they did if they were themself. It is pretty clear that during arc 5, the moment they learn to accept themself, they snap out of the wonderland manipulations on their brain. So I learnt to love Gidget's character for who they are, who they really are. OFW and OC can especially help into seeing who Gidget really is. And with Broomtail mostly centering around Genzou's point of view, one can only imagine if there is a universe where Gidget's point of view on things is the most exploited. I think that would be pretty cool.
ANYWAY, instead of rambling, all I meant to say is HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIDGET!!

The Eye of Wally, Part 3
So, what about this as an option:
In reading about Osiris, Isis and Nephthys, it seems like a more direct parallel would be Sally and Frank as Isis and Nephthys, and maybe Barnaby as Osiris, with Wally taking the role of Horus.
What makes me think of this is this picture:
Tumblr media
These birds (kites) are stand ins for Isis and Nephthys.  (oh, there’s a kite in a tree in the neighborhood).  So we have noticed/seen that Sally and Frank have been there to greet both Eddie and Poppy after their freakouts.  Isis and Nephthys are funerary figures, so they are associated with kites, as they make a mournful sound.  The descriptions of the two are very similar, and in that way of mythology, they are both somewhat the same figure and opposites.  They do have the light/dark and birth/death opposites connotations, while both are considered relevant to the afterlife.  There is a lot of overlap in their association with the God Horus, with both being listed as wife/aunt/mother.
They are similar looking, with their major representative difference being their headdresses:   Nephthys with a house topped by a basket, and Isis being represented with a throne in earlier depictions, and a sundisk between the horns of a cow in later associations.
For our purposes, the headdresses don’t contribute too much, though the use of the sun as representation does fit Sally.  I can’t think of a meaning that would link Frank to the house/basket combo.  If it were a jello mold, 100%.  It occurs to me that Frank could be connected to the moon in some way to serve as Sally’s foil.  He is gray and there is no history as to where he came from.  They have the light/dark, bright/subdued, from the sky/from the unknown, connection to the sun/connection to the earth or under the earth.  Sally is described as female and Frank is described as non-binary.
I have talked before about this idea of Frank being the one that is responsible for a kind of death of Eddie, where Eddie’s constant ability to put himself in danger of being found out or harmed, forces Frank to take on a disassembly or burial of Eddie and starting fresh with a blank version of Eddie.  The situation, as I imagined it, is that Eddie slowly becomes aware of the reality of his situation, with each full realization resulting in a new puppet form that doesn’t have that knowledge.  This would be like The Good Place, where they have the montage where Eleanor has the realization “this is the bad place!” despite being reset over and over again.  In each situation, Eleanor is too clever for her own good, forcing them to be reset many times.
Eddie’s realization at the Homewarming party could be this moment:  he now sees the evil and danger around him, symbolized by him freezing up and seeing red everywhere, as his perspective is seriously shifted.  (Or could this moment with Eddie be the act of resurrection, initiated by Sally?)
Now, looking at this from the perspective of a funerary god Frank, his role as chief mourner makes a lot of sense.  He is the one who sings “Bug-A-Bye,” a very sad song about losing someone.  It is more sad than it should be, supposedly a song about bugs hibernating, but is a mournful song about loss that hints at a deeper meaning.  Like Nephthys, while he is involved in the death process, he is also tasked with mourning the loss.
Thinking of them as this funerary god, it makes sense to pair him with Sally as Isis.  Sally is of the sky and related to the light (like Isis).  Isis is known to be involved in resurrection (as with Osiris) and guiding the dead.  Is this why Sally is involved in the aftermath of both Eddie and Poppy’s events?  Is she there to guide and/or resurrect them?  (She guides Eddie to the party before his moment.)  I had considered that with Frank’s singing about his bugs returning that he was involved in the resurrection of them.  He dresses as a vampire for Halloween, after all.  I took that to possibly mean that he gave Eddie a sense of immortality, converting his life from one state to another, but what if Sally, with her association with the sun, is the one that resurrects?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we compare Frank’s eyelids to the image of the Sally’s house that I keep coming back to, he matches.  Now, with both sides of the door being underneath Sally’s crown/corona, there is still a reasonable possibility that it is referring to a dual nature of Sally housed in one body, but could it be possible that it is a reference to Frank as her foil, in the same ways as Nephtys is to Isis?
Also—crown/corona is somewhat equivalent to Isis’s throne and the sun that serve as her symbols.
If they are equivalents, then who is their Osiris?  Who do they gather together and resurrect?  My initial response was Barnaby, because we have seen him depicted as in pieces multiple times.  I think this is probably a good bet, given that fact.  However, we have seen both Sally and Frank address Eddie and Poppy after their bad times.  Seeing as Eddie has been my primary focus as a resurrection (song, dressing as Frankenstein’s monster) that is a possibility.  There is no reason to believe that Frank would be particularly sad about resurrecting Barnaby, though that is a very normal response to someone dying.
Another reason I like Barnaby for this theory is that it is closer to the next consideration—Horus.  Horus, in my mind, would be the equivalent for Wally.  Horus is the son of Osiris, though not conceived with forethought on his part.  Barnaby serves as a paternal figure to Wally, ushering him around and explaining things to him.  Plus, the eye of Horus is a similar concept to the eye of Wally.  The eye of Horus is all-seeing, in a protective sense.  The eye of Wally is perhaps not as protective but is ever-present.  I can’t say with any certainty that it is a bad thing, though.  We also know that the eye of Wally serves to provide him with restoration.  The more he is perceived and his eye is duplicated, the stronger he becomes.
I may write more about Barnaby and Wally in this theory. I may also be working instead. So busy.

Why Goodbye Volcano High resonates with me as...
...a musician
As a musician, it's hard not to immediately identify with Fang. What musician doesn't want their music to be heard, to play at music festivals, and have music as their career. I can wax poetic about how music is about self expression and it doesn't matter if I have an audience, but in the end, I still want my music to be heard, and enjoyed. And Fang is on track to making this their entire career.
Making music has been a minor hobby for me. Even as a kid, I knew there's almost no chance I can make it as a musician, so I went down the route of being a software engineer instead. It's such a minor part of my life that I don't even bother identifying as a musician, I just fool around with instruments. But something about GVH ignited that passion in me, and during my first playthrough, I wrote six songs inspired by themes in the game. Even if I'll stay an amateur, I want to make the most from life, and not let the fire die. (See last section)
All that said, I felt very bad for Fang throughout the game. I know how tough the life of a full time musician is. The industry is just completely screwed. And unlike me, Fang doesn't have another option other than music. The game also drives it in that Fang's friends all have viable career paths, while Fang doesn't. But then, the meteor throws an interesting wrench into this, as now Fang is the only one who achieved their dreams. I'm not sure what the point of this paragraph is besides fuck capitalism, give musicians a living wage.
...an enby
Fang really made me more comfortable about being non-binary. It's amazing seeing enby representation that doesn't feel shoehorned in, or merely an afterthought. It's actually integral to the story. Both Fang and Sage struggle having their parents take their identities seriously, and that mirrors my own fears of not being taken seriously as an enby myself, which leads me to only come out as non-binary to my closest friends, and just remain a binary trans woman to everyone else.
It's honestly amazing to see everyone in Caldera Bay being accepting of the queer cast, like being queer isn't a big deal at all. And that's how it should be. Everyone just calls Fang by their name and pronouns (except their parents of course), and no one seems to mind that Reed brought Alvin to prom. This really makes me feel more comfortable about my identity, and I feel proud to be queer. We don't owe them normal.
...an immigrant
It's so rare to see stories about the intersection of being trans and being an immigrant, so when I read Rosa's story, I felt it must've been written by someone who also has first hand experience. There's a distinct feel from my family that me being trans is a "western" thing, not something they could ever understand. Or worse, that I'm being corrupted by "the west" in some way by moving there. There's so much extended family I can never see again because I'm now an abomination of the family tree.
I find it really difficult to talk about this as I fear I'd be misread as being racist for suggesting that my home country is more queerphobic or something, but that isn't my point. I just want to tell my story, and my experience of being alienated for both culture and gender, in both my origin and destination countries, is one that most folks can't emphasize with. (Venba also does do a good job with the culture part, so you should check that out too)
There's a separate rant about how this brand of queerphobia was actually planted by Christian missionaries and not at all "traditional culture", but that's for another time.
...someone struggling with mental health
I've been obsessed with the game for months since I played it. I went through what everyone calls "Dino depression", but I think it really helped me, and it was the game I needed to play at this moment in my life. I struggle with depression and burnout. At times it can be hard to know what the point is, or feel that any of this is worth it. The first few weeks after the game, I actually felt more depressed, as I thought about what the point of life is if it all is temporary anyway, and what I would do if a meteor were to hit in 8 months. And I was scared, because I felt like my life wasn't under my control. Over time, I've learned to think about it more positively. If life is temporary, then it's up to me to make the most of it. If life has no meaning, it's up to me to make my own meaning. I have amazing friends around me, and I still have tons of music to make.

Queering the Wild by Micha Rahder (2019) [final]
Queer Intimacy in Non-Human Animals
The author introduces several examples of ‘queerness’ across the animal kingdom—the ‘birds and the bees’, --a lot about birds since we have a lot of research on them. The study on zebra finches reminded me of the concept of ‘naturecultures’; they choose their mates and often do not stray,  same-sex or otherwise and so this supports the idea that there is more to ‘bird life than breeding and that the social aspects of bonding might be just as important’ (02).
“The idea that sexual activity might be about more than just making babies is hard for people who were raised in contemporary U.S. American culture in particular, with its focus on abstinence-only sex ed and heavy legislation of uteruses and the people who have them” (02) but finches, bonobos, dolphins or ‘female fish that prefer males that have had sex with other males, all chip away at that anthropocentric frame’ (02).
“Because scientists carry their cultural biases into their work, most research approaches these kinds of queer traits and behaviors as problems to be solved” (02). Heteronormativity has made scientists ‘run in circles’ trying to explain why such ‘maladaptive’, ‘perverted’ traits appear throughout the natural world such as nutritional deficiencies, the stress of captivity, that they’re just ‘dumb’ and can’t tell the difference, it’s a ‘misfire’ attempt at heterosexuality, or they’re just ‘practicing’.
“Evolutionary biologists need to think about same-sex sexual behavior in non-human animals as more than just a problem to be solved” and “same sex sexual behavior is both a trait that is potentially shaped by selection and a force that shapes selection on other traits” or they should “consider how same-sex sexual activities shape ongoing evolutionary processes” (03).
Tumblr media
Extending Our Chosen Family
Evolution has no “direction or purpose” and humans are not “the representation of the ultimate expression of life on earth” (03). If we look at microbiology, we can see true diversity. “Only recently have scientists started to pay attention to how much [microbes exchanging DNA] might be driving evolution” (03). Fungi are also an incredible example of sexual diversity; with one species alone having more than 23,000 documented mating types (sexes) and individuals can physically ‘merge or separate in different environmental contexts’  making it difficult to differentiate them.
‘Symbiopoesis’ or “how organisms can be intimately involved in each other’s development” (squid and light emitting bacteria, bees and pollination, acacia trees and ants, wasps and figs).(03)  Again this reminds me of the Lakota concept of Mitakuye Oyasin—we are all related, all my relatives.
Competition//Cooperation is another binary that queer ecology can challenge.
“Queering nature means learning about our connectedness with all the living earth. Here, the classic queer recognition of chosen family extends beyond humans, recognizing our kinship and interdependence with our companion animals, the foods we eat, our microbes and others. It means taking pleasure in those connections, learning to recognize pleasure in others and understanding how our human identities, gender expressions and sexual behaviors are only a small piece of the wide, queer living world” (04).
Queer ecology asks us to be curious about the ‘magnificent overabundance of reality’ (Bagemihl). “Breaking free from the historical biases of science allows us to move forward together with other life on earth, rather than thinking ourselves as separate from or above it. That kind of hierarchical thinking has kept queer and other marginalized communities away from the benefits of being outdoors and has led directly to the tangle of global environmental crises in which we find ourselves now. Learning from non-humans is a great way to undo these legacies” (04).

#QueerIslamicHistory Project
“Queering the Adam”
Adam is considered the first human-being and progenitor of all humanity in all Abrahamic religions. Queering the "Adam" within the contexts of jewish, christian and Islamic traditions, scripture, and literature involves reinterpreting traditional narratives about Adam to challenge rigid heteronormative assumptions, explore gender fluidity, and examine the multiplicity of identities and relationships embedded within these texts. Such an approach does not seek to distort Adam's sanctity and nobility but rather to reimagine him in ways that affirm diverse experiences of gender, sexuality, and identity.
Gender Fluidity in the Creation
Genesis 1:27 states,
“So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
This verse suggests that Adam was created as a being that encompassed both male and female aspects. Some Jewish traditions, particularly midrashic interpretations, suggest that Adam was originally created androgynous or intersex being, containing both masculine and feminine qualities. Similar to the biblical narrative, the Quranic story of Adam can be queered by focusing on the idea that Adam’s partner, Hawwa (Eve), was created from him. This suggests a shared essence rather than a strict dichotomy between male and female.
The Qur’an states:
“God created you from a single soul (nafs) and made its mate from it.” (4:1)
The term nafs is gender-neutral and can be interpreted as an undifferentiated soul, opening the possibility of seeing Adam as a being that transcends binary gender categories. This challenges todays binary understandings of gender and opens the door for a queer reading of Adam as embodying fluidity rather than fixed categories.
Lilith and the Question of Equality
In Jewish mysticism and folklore, Lilith is described as Adam’s first partner, created at the same time and from the same substance as Adam (unlike Eve, who is made from Adam's rib). Lilith’s refusal to submit to Adam’s authority and her departure from Eden signify a rebellion against patriarchal and heteronormative structures. Lilith’s story highlights the possibility of alternative relationships and challenges the idea of compulsory heterosexuality in the Edenic narrative.
There's no mention of Lilith in the Quran. But Iblis (a djinn) refusal to bow Adam is similar to Lilith's refusal to submit to Christian version of Adam. The role of Iblis (later known as Satan) in refusing to bow to Adam (Qur’an 7:11–12) introduces a figure who challenges divine and social order. While traditionally viewed as a rebellious figure, Iblis can also be queerly interpreted as embodying the refusal to conform to normative hierarchies. In this sense, the narrative of Adam and Iblis becomes a space for exploring the tension between conformity and individuality.
Adam’s Creation from Diverse Materials
According to Islamic traditions, Adam was created from clay of earth.
The Quran states,
“I am creating a human being from clay…” (38:71–72)
Islamic exegetes often emphasize the diversity of the materials used—different colors of earth clay, textures, and qualities—symbolizing humanity’s inherent diversity. A queer reading might highlight how Adam’s creation reflects the multiplicity of human identities, rejecting rigid binaries.
Eve and the Queer Act of Creation
The creation of Eve from Adam’s rib (Genesis 2:21–23) could be interpreted queerly as a metaphor for self-replication or a nontraditional mode of reproduction. Unlike the Biblical scripture, the Quran emphasizes on nafs rather than Adam's rib. Eve’s origin within Adam undermines strict binary distinctions between male and female. Furthermore, the deep connection between Adam and Eve can be read not just as a heterosexual relationship but as an exploration of intimacy that transcends worldy gender roles.
The Representation of Desire and Knowledge
The Quranic narrative of Adam and Hawwa eating from the forbidden tree (Qur’an 2:35–36) can be reinterpreted as a moment of self-discovery and the embrace of knowledge, much like in the biblical account. This transgressive act, often framed as sin, might also be seen as an assertion of agency and autonomy, paralleling the queer experience of claiming one’s identity in defiance of societal expectations.
The Fall as a Queer Moment
The act of eating the forbidden fruit, often framed as a "fall" into sin, can be reimagined as a moment of queer resistance in Abrahamic traditions. By transgressing the divine authoritarianism, Adam and Eve step into an awareness of their bodies, desires, and identities. This act can be seen as a metaphor for embracing knowledge and experience outside the bounds of normative structures, much like queerness challenges societal norms.
Adam in Mystical Understandings
Sufi literature often blurs the boundaries between human and divine, self and other, male and female. The concept of wahdat al-wujud (the unity of being) suggests that all distinctions are illusory. Adam, as the first human and a reflection of the divine, can thus be seen as “encompassing all identities within himself”. This mystical perspective aligns with queer understandings of fluid and non-binary identities.
The intimate relationship between Adam and God in both traditions—marked by direct communication, divine breath (Genesis 2:7; Qur’an 15:29), and care— can be queered to reflect the longing and intimacy that transcends human categories of gender or sexuality. This divine-human relationship challenges heteronormative frameworks, suggesting a model of love and connection that is expansive and inclusive.
In conclusion, queering Adam in biblical and Islamic traditions offers us to reimagine foundational stories in ways that affirm the diversity of human experience. By focusing on themes of fluidity, alternative relationships, and the rejection of rigid norms, these narratives can be transformed into spaces of liberation and affirmation for queer Christians, Jews and Muslims. This approach does not negate the sacredness of these texts but instead deepens their relevance by engaging with the complexities of human existence.

Headcanon: Kais/Shinjin/Glinds and gender + sex
Disclaimer: I just wanna state my own view on this point based on Shins line in the newest episode of Daima. These are my opinions on this topic and absolutely not canon or true or anything! Please consider this before reading. You are always welcome to discuss things with me or others but please stay constructive and friendly.
TL;DR: Do I see Shin and the Glinds as genderless/sexless? No. Will I keep Shins and Bontos gender and sex as well as the activity of sex for me, my stories, my art and my blog in general? Yes.
And here is why!
First of there are many reasons for me to keep things like they are on this blog. The most important for me is that I like it that way. Simple as that.
But wait, there is more!
Glinds don’t have a gender:
Tumblr media
As you can see Shin said it himself. This should obviously be the main proof and close the case for me, right? Well, I have some issue with this because of two things: language/translation and gender representation.
I don’t speak japanese, so I will take my time to do some research later. Though I take this statement with a pint of salt, simply because he says “gender”, not “sex”. In english there are massive differences between these two words. Sex refers to the genitals and bodily function of reproduction while gender is the overall appearance and recognition as feminine, masculine or otherwise. In my native tongue there are no two separate words for these interpretations, but just a single one (which can be heckin confusing). If it is the same in japanese I have to find out later. I don’t deny that today, in such a connected and open world, the studio or translators put this wording with the right idea and intention into this place. Could totally be! But at first I will stay skeptical of that statement, simply I still lack some very important background here.
The fact that Shin says “gender” in the english translation simply implies for me, that all glinds are non-binary representing, which I personally don’t really see as fitting comparing this to the first episode and character sheets from Toei. Shin is always referred to with masculine pronouns and stated as a brother, same with Degesu. Their sister Dr. Arisu is referred to with feminine pronouns, praised for her beauty (a social structure amongst us humans mostly used with feminine presenting individuals) as well shown with an obvious feminine body structure and clothes to show it pretty good. Seeing the other inhabitants of the Demon Realm we can definitely say that Glinds know what gender and sexes are and mean to the individual. So, there is stuff showing us that this statement cant be correct, right?
The Glinds totally can still be non-binary! Yes, I don’t deny that. Though this usually depends on an individual themselves and not on an entire race. Saying ALL Glinds are non-binary is very strange for me and that’s why I cant really believe it.
So, as long as there are no new statements on these two parts of the conversation, I stay with a he/him for Shin and Bonto. If Im wrong with the series, then I don’t really care, simply because I prefer them like this on my blog.
Fruits don’t have (a) sex:
This is something that haunts me for years now and the new series doesn’t make it any better. If Shin isn’t talking about gender then is he talking about sex? But, even Goku mentioned that Shin must be a fruit or plant, which obviously don’t need a sex or sexual intercourse, right?
Tumblr media
Well, if we really want to compare the Glinds with regular earth fruit or plants... then yes. Earth fruits are simply a baby-plant covered in nutritious material that helps the sapling to grow in the beginning of their lives. Many fruits are also delicious for animals so that they can carry the seeds far away to new grounds. Comparing that to Glinds its kinda similar. They hang from their mother tree as babies und walk around. We don’t know yet what happens when a Glind dies and/or if they can transform into a Glind tree, but it’s a possibility.
But fruits don’t need a sex, right? Wrong again, simply because this is how earth plants work. Plants and similar individuals like fungi have sexes! And not even two of them, but many many more and so many different variants! That’s how they mix their DNA and prevent inbreeding. That’s how we humans changed some of their DNA and breed different species together to new plants we use now (our first apples were tiny and rare compared to the big monsters we now know). And that’s why I also see that Glinds can be born with sexes. Depending on the things they need to do with their DNA-like information later on in their life having a sex and genitals for mixing might be necessary.
(Yes, Im fully aware that they can be totally build bonkers with DNA and genitalia and bodily functions, since Glinds are just not the same like earthlings in any way! But I wanna keep things smooth here and I think Toriyama liked the simplicity of just putting earth-like structures onto aliens. I mean, Goku and Vegeta can mix their alien DNA with humans!)
Last point: do Glinds have to have sex? Yes. Even if they are simply a fruit and not a tree, which does all the pollinating stuff here on earth while the fruit is just the offspring, I can totally see it being a thing. For one, their bodies might just easily be built like this during all their generations. They grow and mature from a baby stage to adulthood, just like humans do. Its not a big thing for nature to involve something onto their bodies to make reproduction easier, right? That would also be a reason for the gender dimorphism Shin and his siblings show.
Even if Dr. Arisu can artificially or magically modify her body to simply look “female”, it would still be a hint for my second point here: social benefit. Sex for us humans isn’t just for the babymaking. We crave sex for its intimacy, its fun, its power, its releasing magic and many more reasons. It bonds us and I think its also something a race like Glinds would be using, too. Even if they really don’t need something for reproduction, I can absolutely see sex as a part of their social and cultural life as a group. For me, there is no way they wouldn’t other than they don’t want to.
And that’s why I will keep going with Shin and Bonto having sexes and sexual intercourse.
Thats all I have. Thanks for reading and have a nice day! :)

Numbers! most of them are just sort of there
0 - 10/10 number, very useful, helps proving uniqueness, nicely splits the number line, breaks division which is very fun, additive identity
1 - 7/10 number, kinda the default, multiplicative identity, the induction engine
2 - 9/10 number, for all your actually a number needs, root-s nicely, 2+2=2*2=2^2 (chef's kiss), the only even prime, binary is hella funky (just to be clear though, this whole post is written in base-(# months from January to October inclusive))
3 - 6/10 number, sorta ok I guess, triangles are cool but this isn't a triangle just a triangle number, the other useful root, prime
4 to 10 - 5/10 numbers, sort of on a par with 3 but I might need to start using a calculator and beginning to get same-y.
Notable exceptions: 6=1+2+3=1*2*3 and 7 is just cool
>10 - 3/10 numbers, nothing really stands out here, I will get some slight anxiety if you ask me to do adding or multiplication with these without a calculator, just use induction at this point, this is not the sort of maths I chose maths to do.
The numbers you need complicated power series to reach or are defined ito functions - 10/10 numbers, fantastically unhelpful, really cool because these might as well be infinity and my brain can't cope (For Example: graham's number, googol, Tree(3), 52!)
-1 - 0/10 number (more like hellspawn), to say this is a number and not an inherently evil sentient object is false, hides itself in a minus sign, its entire purpose is to cause sign errors and make real analysis harder
Fractions - 7/10 numbers, rational is the new sexy, much better than decimals, somehow still a countable set despite being thicc in the reals (I know the term is dense but it's 1:30 in the morning, cut me some slack)
Irrationals - 5*sqrt(2)/10 numbers, slightly cooler and more mysterious than fractions, knows the uncomputable and normal numbers but won't tell you their addresses as you're just not cool enough
Mathematical constants - 6/10 numbers, useful but kinda like 3 in that they're a little boring. Some Exciting Constants: φ, Euler's Constant (γ), lemniscate constant (ϖ). Fun fact: e has a really cool continued fraction representation
Infinity - 11/10 concepts, maybe numbers - maybe not, so cool they deserve an illogical rating, gotta love the ordinals, countability is soooooooooo freaking cool (check out cantor's diagonalisation proof), I'm counting infinitesimal numbers as well here, also, the convention for just calling infinity one number for the complex numbers is hecking amazing
i - 7/10 number - very cool, philosophically taxing, the incredible original to the quaternions' disappointing sequel (maybe I'll change my mind when i actually learn about quaternions), geometry and rotation are now part of numbers! , makes differentiation so much more awesome

Right, I need a pinned post wi' stuff in it so that people if they were t' click upon me Tumblr account'll learn things about stuff.
Introductions
'Ello, I'm Stone, Also Known As SeashoresWall an' in art I'm NoelBobby, as y'can see by the title of this blog, but Stone is the name most should know me as. It started as a random word username in early secondary an' kinda ended up becomin' an unshakable parta me identity, as tends t' 'appen. NoelBobby is a bad pun on 'Nobody' that I kinda got stuck with, again as tends t' 'appen.
I'm in me 20s, I'm autistic, I'm aromantic, I'm asexual and I'm non-binary. I'm a proud user of it/its, they/them, she/her and Stone at time of writin'. Also, yes, I always type like this, it is a representation of my West Midlands English dialect, I've spent years refinin' the process of transcribin' me thoughts as they am. There am a few reasons for this, from sociopolitical t' simply wantin' t' be myself very clearly an' obviously.
The Art Elaboration Bit.
But the reason we am 'ere is that I'm an artist. An artist who draws a variety of things from little comics, trees, aliens, a comedy series about an incompetent and overconfident Mercenary called Penn, but my main thing is Humans. Drawings of Humans. The NoelBobby Humans.
Yes, my NoelBobby Humans is a years old and continuous process by me t' capture what I think is the Beauty of Humanity. An' the Beauty of Humanity is, f'me, our diversity. Through simple styalised drawings of many thousands of people I aim t' capture our infinite beauty. I hope t' capture the joy and wonder I feel when I'm on the streets, on a bus or in a large building full of people. I love drawing Humans.
Links
This Tumblr account only started gettin' properly used on the 10th of November, 2023 (before then all that was on here was my Coddmic and a single other Random Comic). My Deviantart 'as the things done since January of 2020 when I started publishing me works. Before that, including 1175 Humans. I will admit, the earliest of 'em aren't up t' me current standards, but that's anythin' after 3, nearly 4 years of refinement, innit?
Also, 'ere's a link t' me Ko-Fi. Where you can commission me for art or just donate me some money if y'want t' 'elp me call 'Artist' my job rather than just a 'obby.
Either way, near daily art for ya 'ere. Thanks for yer time readin' this.

Every year or so I return to this absolutely bizarre book called A Voyage to Arcturus (1920). I think about it often. It's like a mental puzzle. Every piece means something. From what I can tell, it follows the social and spiritual development of both A human being and human beings in general as they seek ultimate truth. Or--i really should say "Man" because casual misogyny.
As you can probably tell from my language, it's a product of Western and Christian thought--some British guy. I read on Wikipedia that he inspired CS Lewis, which I can absolutely see.
Anyway, it's weirdly unique. If you're into representations of non-binary characters, there are at least two, one of whom uses neopronouns. If you're into the novel and bizarre, you can do no better: people casually sprout new sensory organs, turn other people into trees, leap off bridges to their deaths, strangle each other, eat raw jellyfish, and philosophize at the drop of a hat. I mean for "casually" to modify all of those and so much more. It's unintentionally funny sometimes; in the audiobook, the actor's voice for Spadevil--a character whose actual identity I'm still not sure about, as he could represent Elijah or John the Baptist or Jesus or one of the two witnesses of Revelations or the Jewish people or maybe even Buddhism, although that's probably a stretch--is like Bela Lugosi's. I cackle every time he talks. And he talks a lot so I'm very tired ok
It's public domain, so there's no reason you can't imbibe: https://gutenberg.org/ebooks/1329
If you do read it, come back here and talk to me about it, because what the actual fuck

Gender Queer (Kobabe, 2020) Book Review
Tumblr media
Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe Category: Banned Or Challenged Book Category
Target Age Group: 16+ years of age (Grades 11th and 12th)
Summary: This book follows author Maia Kobabe’s experience with exploring and accepting eir gender throughout eir life. Please note that the author uses ei/em/eir pronouns, which will be used in this review.
Justification: There are a number of reasons that this book was included and I discovered it when I pursued the American Library Association’s Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2024 (American Library Association, 2024). The book has been challenged for alleged sexual content but I found the book to be a respectful exploration of the author’s experience with gender and a brief discussion about physical anatomy in opposition to gender expression. The book has also received various rewards from the American Library Association including the Alex Award (American Library Association, 2020) and the Stonewall-Israel Fishman Non-fiction Honor Award (American Library Association, 2022). 7th to 12th grade is also a time of great growth and personal discovery for youth, in particular 11th and 12th grade because they are becoming adults. A book exploring gender identity at a time when students are developing their own sense of identity (sexual and gender) is bound to be pretty popular.
Evaluation: For this review, I will be evaluating illustrations, theme, and pacing.
Illustrations:  Where Kobabe shines would be in eir illustrations, particularly when describing emotions. On page 67 Kobabe uses metaphorical plants to describe eir belief at the time in the gender binary and eir obliviousness to the non-binary option. The male and female trees, respectively, are drawn realistically as fully grown, the lines of the trees and the background dividing them are rigid. The male side is drawn under a dark sky with stars, and, by contrast, the female tree is drawn with a bright yellow background and the sun.. These metaphorical representations utilizing nature and celestial bodies is common throughout the book. In this way eir feelings (and a very common feeling about the binary) is illustrated as divisive and decisive, as if one has to pick one gender or the other. I am able to better visualize this feeling of division by seeing the contrast between the two genders drawn so starkly.
Theme:   I believe the theme would best be described as follows: Self identity, especially gender and sexual identity, are developed over time, both with experience and feeling, and a matter of finding the right fit for you. The book follows Kobabe’s experience from a young age through eir present as of publishing which helps develop this theme well. The main character, Kobabe eirself, recounts a number of different experiences, supportive friends, and feelings which ei believe helped em develop eir own understanding of eir identity. It is easy to follow and draw conclusions about how these moments helped em with eir identity because each memory or feeling provides enough context to understand what the experience meant to the author without directly stating “gender identity is hard to understand and I believe these exact experiences helped me.”
Pacing:  The book is a memoir and follows the author from childhood to adulthood with emphasis placed on specific instances, which makes pacing pivotal. Throughout each moment enough context is given to understand what happened and then what ei are feeling about it. There are some moments that felt extraneous to me and are mentioned briefly, almost in passing, such as the plotline about ei receiving a necklace from eir mother once ei started menstruating which ei never wore. Other moments are explained very deeply but then more emphasis is put on explaining how the situation made em feel. The dedication of time and space to these feelings is excessive, spanning several pages and slowing the pace. While these moments are meant to describe very personal feelings and may help a reader going through something similar feel understood, it does create moments where the pace slows or quickens depending on how much emotional and contextual detail Kobabe wants to provide, which I found inconsistent. It did not necessarily create any issues for me aside from moments that I questioned the inclusion of details, such as the example above.

What is SPIR-V? How SYCL Expands C++ Virtual Functions
Tumblr media
Discover SPIR-V and how it lets SYCL support heterogeneous C++ virtual functions. This post covers two notions that take SYCL in different directions.
At the 13th IWOCL International Workshop on OpenCL and SYCL, Intel's Alexey Sachiko presented several experimental ideas to expand SYCL's use and scope as a cross-architecture framework for accelerated computing from edge to cloud and AI PC to supercomputer.
Virtual functions are discussed first. SYCL aims to make C++ to multiarchitecture computing a smooth transition. Virtual functions can be redefined in derived classes to offload kernels, so expanding them is consistent.
The second concept is abstraction, although not of base class functions. Increased SPIR-V backend abstraction support will help SYCL's low-level implementation interface with the wide range of hardware architectures and custom accelerators available. The purpose is to improve SYCL LLVM-SPIR-V collaboration.
In many ways, SYCL is becoming more general. SYCL abstraction, from low-level hardware abstraction to C++ virtual function objects, will be discussed as its development continues.
SYCL Virtual Functions
Virtual functions have been used in C++ program development since its inception. Popular backend abstractions like the Kokkos C++ performance portability interface, used in high-speed scientific computing, require it.
Even though the SYCL standard allows one-definition rule (ODR) virtual inheritance, device functions cannot invoke virtual member functions, making code migration difficult.
Alexey begins his talk with a simple base class with a few virtual methods, direct classes with overrides, and offload kernels.
Easy oneAPI kernel property addition for virtual class inheritance.
The experimental indirectly callable function properties from the sycl_ext_oneapi_kernel_properties GitHub sandbox are included first. A function or offload kernel can be identified as a device function and invoked indirectly.
Why do virtual functions need this?
Program objects have virtual class overrides tables. For each virtual function call, a pointer from this table is loaded to call the relevant derived function.
In the Base function, SYCL device code limitations are violated when foo throws an exception and allocates memory.
The indirectly_callable feature makes the virtual function a device function with all its limitations, like the SYCL_EXTERNAL macro.
For the same reason, assume_indirect_calls properties_tag is needed. Kernel virtual calls without this property fail.
Alexey then discusses more advanced topics and future projects like optional kernel feature support and reqd_sub_group_size.
Considering Implementation
When designing an app with this new functionality, consider these high-level factors:
SYCL applications with virtual function support should separate each virtual function set into a device image. If you use optional kernel features, duplicate with empty functions. This provides all link stage symbols without speculative compilation.
For kernel-equipped device images, connect all images with the same virtual function sets.
When targeting SPIR-V, this happens runtime. Otherwise, it happens during build link.
See the for more on technology implementation.
Ext_intel_virtual_functions is in Intel's LLVM GitHub.
Test cases for sycl_ext_oneapi_virtual_functions extension in the same source code tree.
Improve SYCL Code using Virtual Functions
Recent versions of the Intel DPC++ Compatibility Tool 2025.1 and the Intel oneAPI DPC++/C++ Compiler include experimental and evolving virtual function functionality.
SPIR-V Backend SYCL Application
SPIR-V, a binary intermediate language for compute kernels and graphical-shader stages, was specified by the Khronos Group, which regulates SYCL. Its portable format unifies intermediate representation and programming interface for heterogeneous accelerators.
A varied language and API environment supports it
This creates a duality of intermediate abstracted hardware backend representation for C++ compilers based on LLVM and LLVM Intermediate Representation, as with all CLANG project compilers.
The SPIR-V to LLVM Translator provides bidirectional translation, however it is not updated as part of the LLVM project tree, making it prone to rare incompatibilities and disconnects.
To remedy this, Intel's compiler development team recommends SPIR-V as a normal LLVM code generation target, like other hardware target runtimes. Thus, the LLVM project includes an SPIR-V backend to ensure thorough integration testing and allow it to be used with OpenAI Triton backends, graphics-oriented programming models like Vulkan or HLSL, and heterogeneous computing with OpenCL or SYCL.
With extensive documentation, an active and growing LLVM SPIR-V working group supports and maintains the Backend:
SPIR-V Target User Guide
Clang SPIR-V Support
Intel compiler developers help resolve LLVM IR semantics and specifications to SPIR-V mapping difficulties as part of Intel's commitment to the open source community.
In his presentation, Alexey Sachkov details them and Intel's solution.
Is Spir-V?
SPIR-V, a high-level binary intermediate language, defines compute kernels and graphics shaders. It was created by Khronos Group, an OpenGL, Vulkan, and OpenCL organisation.
What that means and why it matters:
IR: GPU assembly language universal. Developers utilise GLSL or HLSL instead of writing shader code for each GPU architecture, which is complicated. Compilers create SPIR-V from this source code.
SPIR-V comes as compiled binary, not source code. This has numerous benefits:
Application startup and shader loading are faster when drivers don't parse and compile text-based shader code.
IP Protection: Shader source code is hidden, making algorithm reverse-engineering harder.
Closer Hardware: SPIR-V's lower-level representation allows more direct control and performance adjustment than high-level languages.
Standard and Portable: Before SPIR-V, each graphics API (like OpenGL or DirectX) handled shaders differently, requiring several compilers and duplication. SPIR-V is a royalty-free, open standard for graphics and computing APIs.
New, low-overhead graphics API Vulkan leverages SPIR-V shaders.
Although optional, OpenGL 4.6 and later support SPIR-V.
OpenCL: GPU/processor parallelism.
In Shader Model 7.0, Microsoft aims to replace DXIL with SPIR-V for Direct3D interoperability. Important for graphics ecosystem unity.
SYCL Code Compilation Target: SPIR-V
The SPIR-V Backend for LLVM is still being developed, however it has been a project target since January 2025. Try it and comment on the LLVM project RFC page.
Use SPIR-V, oneAPI, and SYCL Now
To learn about these and other new features in LLVM-based C++ compilers and toolchains with SYCL support, see the Intel oneAPI DPC++ C++ Compiler and oneAPI Overview landing page.
